Firsthand

Switching shouldn't cost you your history.

Most survey apps make leaving feel like starting over: your baselines reset, your trend lines begin at zero, and the year you spent asking customers where they came from stays behind. Firsthand reads the export file your current app already gives you — unchanged, exactly as it downloaded — and rebuilds that history on this side.

The same four steps every time

Upload the file. Check the draft. Go.

  1. Export from your current app

Use its own export button. Firsthand never asks for your login to another service and never connects to one on your behalf — it reads a file you already have.

  2. Upload it to Firsthand

Surveys → Import, pick the app you're coming from, choose the file. Nothing is renamed or reformatted first.

  3. Review the draft it creates

Every import lands as a draft survey, never a live one. Your imported history can't start serving to real checkouts by accident, and it never mixes into the metrics for a survey you're actually running.

  4. Map the answers to channels

Your old answer labels probably don't match ours — "IG", "Instagram" and "instagram-story" are three spellings of one channel. Point them at the canonical channels once and the imported years line up beside the new weeks in the Reality Check.

What actually moves

An honest ledger.

This is the same for every vendor. Where a specific app differs, its page says so.

Comes across

  • Your questions, in their original order, with their answer options
  • Every response, grouped back into one submission per order
  • Multi-select answers, kept as multiple answers rather than flattened to text
  • Typed "Other" write-ins, attached to the answer they belong to
  • The original response date — so a two-year-old answer charts in the month it was actually given
  • The Shopify order and customer the response belongs to, wherever the export names them

Doesn't, and why

  • Response rates. No vendor exports how many people saw the survey, only who answered. Rather than invent a denominator, Firsthand shows imported responses with no rate at all.
  • Customer emails and names. Located in the file only so they can be dropped at the door. Firsthand joins on Shopify's order and customer ids, so importing does not hand us a category of personal data we otherwise never hold.
  • Your old app's charts. The underlying answers come across; the reports get rebuilt here, against ours.

Imported responses are marked as imported for good. They're kept out of response-rate math by construction, not by a setting you have to remember — because a survey app that quietly inflates its own numbers with backfilled history is exactly the sort of thing worth switching away from.

Thinking about moving?

Firsthand is finishing up ahead of its Shopify App Store listing. If you're sitting on an export and want to know whether it will read cleanly, send it up — a real person reads these.
